Sulawesi and Bunaken National Park
In the north of the island of Sulawesi, you will find Bunaken National Park, which is one of the first marine parks. Visibility is up to 40 meters deep and the highest biodiversity in the world. The Marine National Park area is home to thousands of different species of fish, coral, endangered marine mammals and reptiles, birds, molluscs and mangrove species. The coral reefs around Bunaken Island are a famous diving destination. From my point of view, Bunaken is one of the best diving spots in Indonesia. Bunaken is interesting for its drop-off, which falls close to the shore deep into the depths. It creates a coral wall made for diving and that is why divers also like to go here. It is not only suitable for diving, but you can also snorkel well here. There are quite a few currents around the island which apparently help keep the water clear. Bunaken is not a destination for big fishes. You can see turtles, lionfishes, scorpionfishes, stonefishes, various sea breams, but also many different shrimps and nudibranches. If you're lucky, you can also see pygmy seahorses sitting on gorgonians. I recommend visiting Nain Island. It's a popular spot for a morning dive where, if you're lucky, you might see hammerhead sharks. At about 38 meters there is a small reef separated from the island by a small strait where there is quite a current, a little cooler water and bigger fish come here in the morning.
